Sausage Tree Safari Camp is situated in the Olifants West Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger National Park and sanctuary to Africa’s famous Big Five. We have over 3900ha of traversing, including 5kms along the Olifants River and you can look forward to a true safari experience of wilderness and undisturbed biodiversity. All of this plus easy accessibility as we are only 25 minutes away from our local town of Hoedspruit.
Uniquely positioned in the bush between Marula, Acacia and Sausage trees with its own special view above and beyond the thorn trees, our waterhole and the majestic Drakensburg range on the horizon, Sausage Tree Safari Camp is a place not easily forgotten!
A small, intimate, luxury tented camp in the Greater Kruger National Park where the Big 5 still roam freely. The Olifants River flows all year round through the reserve with healthy populations of hippo and crocodile, as well as a huge diversity of bird species including the elusive Pels Fishing Owl. Our three standard Luxury Safari-Style Tents and two Luxury Tented Suites are comfortably furnished with bathrooms en-suite, featuring a freestanding bath and an outside shower on a raised base for maximising your views of the bush and the mountains.
Air conditioning, fan, and tea and coffee facilities make it a definitive ‘glamping’ experience with the advantage that staying in a tented camp has, bringing the sounds of nature so much closer to you. Our energetic staff are highly experienced, dedicated and passionate, as our guest reviews reflect.
Their attention to detail will ensure your stay is ultimately relaxing and memorable, from Pitso and Kabelo’s outstanding cuisine, to our welcoming front-of -house teams’ personal service, local knowledge and friendliness. Have you ever slept under canvas in the African bush? Well there truly is nothing like it! The sounds of the night are closer, the smells of nature are stronger, and the feeling of actually being in the bush is so much more intense.
Our three standard Luxury Safari-Style Tents are nestled in between Marula, Knobthorn, Acacia and Sausage Trees and overlook a dry river bed, the bush and the majestic Northern Drakensberg Mountains. They are built in an elevated position each with its own special view. The tents are comfortably furnished and feature an ensuite bathroom with a bath and an outdoor shower. They are fitted with eco air conditioners ensuring that you stay cool on hot summer nights…and can be used as a heater during the colder nights in winter. Each tent has its own private deck with wonderful views of the mountains and the African bush. Insect gauze on all the windows and doors keep the insects outside where they belong.
Our two Luxury Tented Suites are designed to provide a more spacious and versatile accommodation experience, ideal for a romantic getaway or a family adventure with two young children. Leopard Tortoise Suite has a king bed (can also become a twin) while Rhino Beetle Suite has an extra length queen bed. Both suites have a comfortable lounge area for relaxation where the sofa can be changed into a sleeper sofa for younger children.
These suites have the same high-end amenities as the Safari Tents: air-conditioning, an en-suite bathroom with a bath and outdoor shower, and a spacious private deck area. Between the hours spent on safari, guests can relax on the pool deck area, enjoy a spa treatment, or simply choose to watch animals visiting the waterhole and surrounding bush with views of the Drakensberg mountains in the distance.
If guests are planning for a special occasion, we offer extra touches such as a complimentary sparkling wine, a romantic turn-down and a private dinner for two on our sky deck. For those travelling with little ones, we provide board games in the lodge and the option to go on a nature walk around the lodge as well as an outdoor swimming pool where they can cool off.
Experience 360-degree panoramic views from our open vehicles while in search of a variety of wildlife…negotiating valleys, hills and plains which provide some of the most spectacular views in the whole of the Lowveld in over 3,500 hectares of traversing. Each morning and late afternoon, an experienced, professional guide and tracker will take you on a safari game drive through thick bush and along open plains in search of the Big Five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard) as well as a myriad of birds and game species such as giraffe, zebra, warthog, kudu and impala.
Sundowners will be served with tasty snacks watching the sun set over the African bush. During the drives there is a lot of emphasis on giving information on everything that is encountered – whether your interest is birding, insects, plants or trees, your guide will happily share his knowledge with you. Our guides also focus on some of the less noticeable, but equally as important aspects of the bush.
Driving 5kms alongside the Olifants River you will often encounter hippo and crocodile, and a variety of birdlife including the occasional, very special sighting of the much sought after Pels Fishing Owl.
We cater for most special dietary requirements and go the extra mile to serve tasty, dietary dishes that are of the same level and variety as our standard fare. Guests can enjoy a lantern-lit dinner in the boma or on the open deck under the star-studded African sky. Breakfast and lunch are served on the open deck with views of the bush and waterholes frequented by a variety of resident animals.
Pitso is our magician in the kitchen. He is one of the three original staff we inherited many years ago and at that point had no prior experience in cooking.Under Sonja’s guidance and training, Pitso progressed rapidly, clearly a natural and before long the umbilical was cut. Today his passion and skills in the kitchen consistently produces meals of a quality that draw praise and accolades in our guests’ reviews. Kabelo, a graduate from Daktari Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage, is Pitso’s accomplished assistant.
Other than enjoying the variety of the cuisine, their home baked special seeded bran rusks will definitely have you looking forward to your first cup of coffee at sunrise. Homemade muffins, assorted breads, cakes and cookies punctuate the rest of your day.
Sound Safari, using specialised sound equipment, we eavesdrop on the wild and hear what mammals, birds, insects and other animals have to say.
Pure, fresh air and a silence so beneficial to the spirit. Many conversations we have daily are sadly clouded by urban noise and it is amazing how being in the African bush can enable one to connect again with oneself. If you are taking a long overdue break to recharge energies and connect with nature, you can now enjoy treatments in the privacy of our spa area, enjoying a beautiful view out into the bush.

Sausage Tree Safari Camp is a sustainability beacon. Being solar-powered, we minimise our impact on Olifants West Nature Reserve. Staff is employed from surrounding areas, procure locally sourced supplies and clear alien plants while nurturing indigenous flora. We are educators, sharing local knowledge and culture.
We support Rhino Revolution, Rocking 4 Rhinos, and the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit, safeguarding rhinos. Every guest reservation results in a R50 donation to the Daktari Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage that does such good work incentivising pupils from underfunded local community schools. We also promote tours to the Nourish Village self sustainability project.
